U.S. Supreme Court Legalises Same-Sex (Gay & Lesbian) Marriage

The U.S. Supreme Court today, Friday June 27, has legalised same-sex marriage as a legal right across United States.

This follows a ruling by the Supreme Court on a 5-to-4 voting decision to the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution that says that gays and lesbians must have the same right to marry as heterosexual (straight person)

Before the ruling on Friday, 37 states including Washington DC granted marriage license to gay couples leaving out 14 states that banned the union.

The ruling after today means the ban on the 14 states that snubbed same-sex marriage will no longer be able to enforce them but in spite of this new law of the land however, several other States are refusing to grant marriage licenses.

The Court’s ruling has become a historic victory for gay activists who have battled for the legalisation of man-to-man and woman-to-woman marriage for over a decade.

Hours after the new law came out, scores of gay marriage advocates paraded and danced in the street of Washington in front of the Supreme Court while disappointed supporters of traditional marriage walked away.

Several gay couples shortly headed to court houses to apply for marriage license while others were refused to obtain license.

Meanwhile, the President of the United States, Barack Obama has described the court ruling as a “victory for America” stating that “When all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free”.

The President also in a tweet affirmed to the whole world his acceptance of the new law.
